Project Description

Slave handbillSafe Passage: The Underground Railroad in Southwestern Ohio is a multimedia curriculum based on Ohio's academic standards in language arts and social studies for sixth through ninth grades. By engaging in this hands-on experience featuring the Underground Railroad, both teachers and students begin their own journeys, exploring the theme through powerful fiction and nonfiction reading, thought-provoking writing assignments and the moving stories of the people and places of the Underground Railroad. Lesson plans cross several curricular areas, helping teachers provide their students with tools for learning and the knowledge necessary to succeed on state testing.

Researched and developed by educators for educators, Safe Passage brings to the classroom the educational resources of CET, Greater Cincinnati's leading resource for education and enrichment, the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center and the University of Cincinnati College of Education.

The Safe Passage kit includes audio, visual and hands-on resources.

  • Teacher Guide - detailed lesson plans and extension activities for multiple subject areas
  • Instructional Video - a high-definition thirty-minute program (easily used in shorter segments) that includes a detailed introduction to sites along the Ohio River important to the Underground Railroad as well as the people who are part of its story
  • CD - includes an interactive map to navigate sites along the Underground Railroad for learning more about the people and places that contribute to its story through text, video and links to websites
  • Lesson Supplies - fiction and nonfiction books and an Underground Railroad poster
  • Website - http://www.safepassageohio.org includes a web-only lesson, further resources and an opportunity for interactive exploration.
  • Professional Development for Teachers - teachers can find support for Safe Passage and their own professional development in both workshops and a graduate course.

Safe Passage is a collaborative project of the Greater Cincinnati Television Educational Foundation (CET), the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, and the University of Cincinnati College of Education.
