Where can I get the kit?
To order the Safe Passage kit fill out the Kit Order Form (Requires Adobe Acrobat Reader) and mail the form and payment to:

How much does the Safe Passage kit cost?
The kit costs $75.00. Checks, Purchase Orders, or Visa, Mastercard, American Express or Discover credit cards are accepted; checks should be made payable to CET. Add 7% sales tax if being purchased by an individual.

What is in the kit?
The Safe Passage kit includes audio, visual and hands-on resources:

  • the Teacher Guide with detailed lesson plans and extensive activities for multiple subject areas;
  • a high-definition 30-minute program (easily used in shorter segments) that includes a detailed introduction to sites along the Ohio River important to the Underground Railroad as well as the people who are part of its story;
  • a CD that includes an interactive map to navigate sites along the Underground Railroad for learning more about the people and places that contribute to its story through text, video and songs;
  • the book His Promised Land, the autobiography of John P. Parker, former slave and conductor on the Underground Railroad;
  • the book Beyond the River, an introduction to the people and places of the Underground Railroad in and around Ripley, Ohio, by Ann Hagedorn;
  • the book Escape from Slavery, five short stories for students of escape attempts on the Underground Railroad, by Doreen Rappaport;
  • the book The Underground Railroad, an overview of the Underground Railroad movement, by the National Park Service;
  • an Underground Railroad routes poster;
  • website;

Who made the kits?
Safe Passage is a collaborative project of the Greater Cincinnati Television Educational Foundation (CET), the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center and the University of Cincinnati College of Education.

Safe Passage is made possible by a grant from the Ohio Educational Telecommunications Network Commission in support of the Ohio SchoolNet initiative, and is made possible, in part, by the Ohio Humanities Council, a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Who wrote the lessons?
The lessons were written by David Bishop, Northern Kentucky University; Tynisa Compton, National Underground Railroad Freedom Center; Denise Dallmer, Northern Kentucky University; Laura A. B. Dell, CET, April McQueen, CET; Marney Murphy, Three Rivers Local Schools; Michael O'Bryant, Mason City Schools, Karen Regina, National Underground Railroad Freedom Center; and, Nikki Wilson, Mason City Schools.

The Teacher Advisory Committee included Tamara Brown, A. Rickey Harris, and Rick Johnston from Cincinnati Public Schools; Marney Murphy from Three Rivers Local Schools, and Michael O'Bryant, Mason City Schools.

What grade levels is the kit for?
Safe Passage is designed for students in grades six through nine.

Is it adaptable to other grade levels?
Yes, Safe Passage materials can be adapted for younger or older students studying the Underground Railroad.

Does it teach the information required for the state tests?
Lesson plans cross several curricular areas and help prepare students for the state achievement and diagnostic tests and Ohio Graduation Tests.

Do I need a high definition VHS or television to play the videotape?
The instructional video will play back in normal VHS units. The picture will also fit on your existing television set or monitor.

What is on the website?
The Safe Passage website supports the lessons and other materials in the project. In addition to the full content of the Teacher Guide, the website includes a web-only lesson, further resources and an opportunity for interactive exploration. The website also contains Professional Development information for teachers.

What is the Professional Development program for teachers?
In order to help teachers create the best possible classroom milieu, professional development is offered by CET's Learning Services Department. During a Safe Passage workshop, teachers are given an overview of the project and taken step-by-step through each of its components in order to be shown how these components support each other.
